Dear Navigators, Social Workers, Administrators, and Clinical Staff,

With great enthusiasm, I present to you the first issue of JONS in 2019! We have an amazing year of content lined up for you around all things navigation. From our peer-reviewed original research in navigation to our expert commentaries, from our insightful interviews to timely book reviews, we are your source for the critical happenings in oncology nurse and patient navigation.

In this 2019 kickoff issue, we feature an original research article entitled “Oncology Navigation: A Virtual Model to Promote Self-Advocacy in the Cancer Continum” by Joyce R. Schaffer, RN, MSN, AOCNS, and colleagues. These researchers created a virtual navigation program for cancer patients and sought to determine the extent to which the program provided individualized patient education and facilitated self-advocacy.

We also feature a section devoted to topics in hematology. Patricia Fredenburgh, RN, BSN, ONN-CG, contributes an article entitled “Special Considerations for Patients with BloodBorne Cancers.” Annamaria Lattanzio-Hale, MSN, RN, OCN, offers an insightful paper entitled “To Induce or Not to Induce: The Plight of the Older Adult with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.” And Jeri Lensing, OPN-CG, authors a paper regarding the navigator’s role in educating patients.

Further, we hear from 2 navigators on the invaluable contributions of a navigator in “A Nurse Navigator’s Value for the Patient and the Health System” by Kristin Hand, MSN, RN, OCN, and “Guiding Patients Through Their Care Journey” by Jillian Burns, RN, BSN.

We are pleased to bring this issue of JONS to you and are looking forward to advancing the mission of navigation in 2019.

Sincerely, Lillie Digital Signature
