Dear Navigators, Social Workers, Administrators, and Clinical Staff,

Each year at the Annual Navigation & Survivorship Conference of the Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+), we present navigation research through poster presentations of the research abstracts submitted to the academy. These posters and abstracts represent the best of navigation research and are the cornerstone of improving patient care.

The authors are from academic institutions as well as community centers. They are seasoned researchers as well as novices interested in contributing to the literature. What do they have in common? They all have a desire to improve patient care, establish best practices through evidence-based research, and share their findings with others in the navigation community.

Submitting an abstract requires planning; authors must determine their area of study, set goals, collect data, and write the abstract. For many navigators, this idea can be overwhelming. To address this issue, AONN+ created the Assistance for Quality Improvement and Research (AQUIRE) Committee. This committee was created to serve you in your research quests. Its mission is to provide mentorship support to AONN+ members in areas of research, quality, process improvement, metrics, data reporting, abstract writing, and publishing.

In this issue, you will find a call for research abstracts by AONN+ Leadership Council member Cheryl Bellomo, MSN, RN, OCN, ONN-CG. She presents the need for nursing research and the resources available to you to get involved. View the article here.

Further, we are pleased to host a free webinar, worth 1 CEU, entitled Writing Abstracts: Everything You Need to Know to Get Started, But Didn’t Know to Ask. During this webinar, presenters from the AONN+ AQUIRE and Abstract Review Subcommittees will clearly lay out the basics on how to write an abstract for the AONN+ Annual Conference. Whether you’re a nurse navigator, patient navigator, social worker, or administrator, you will learn everything you need to know in order to write and submit an abstract.

This webinar will enable to you:

  1. Articulate the necessary, key components of an abstract
  2. Understand how clinical data can be used to formulate an abstract through discussion of an actual case study
  3. Identify the tools and resources necessary to create an abstract
  4. Comprehend the process of abstract submission for the AONN+ Conference

This is your year to conduct research and share your findings. AONN+ and AQUIRE want to help you reach this goal. I’d like to encourage you to visit us on www.aonnonline.org and connect with a mentor on the AQUIRE Committee. And I hope to see your research featured at this year’s AONN+ Annual Conference.

Sincerely,
Lillie Digital Signature
