Background: Positive employee engagement is essential for success within the workplace and has a profound impact on an organization’s overall performance. Employee engagement also increases job satisfaction and employee retention. Increasing engagement has the potential to improve many different components within oncology navigation. The Sarah Cannon Navigation Engagement Committee was formed in 2018. The committee comprises oncology nurse navigators from 12 of the 15 HCA Healthcare divisions. The committee reviewed the results of the 2018 Employee Engagement Survey, identified 2 areas of focus, and implemented solution strategies.

Objectives:

  • The Sarah Cannon Navigation Engagement Committee was developed to identify common areas where engagement is decreased or lacking across the entire Sarah Cannon Enterprise
  • Strategize, develop, and implement solutions to increase engagement in all of our Sarah Cannon navigation markets

Methods: On November 8, 2018, the first Sarah Cannon Engagement Committee meeting was held onsite in Nashville with 12 nurse navigators representing 12 divisions and 5 tumor types. The committee discussed what engaged employees look and act like. Each committee representative reported on their division’s 2018 Employee Engagement Survey results, detailing in which areas of engagement their market scored lowest and highest. The committee concluded that Professional Development and Communication would be the areas of focus to increase engagement throughout the Sarah Cannon Enterprise, as these 2 areas demonstrated lower scores than other areas. The committee spent much of the day brainstorming methods that could improve Professional Development and Communication. Throughout the year, the Engagement Committee continued to meet monthly and even developed subcommittees to accomplish their goals. They designated 3 co-chairs to lead the group and to ensure there was continued momentum throughout the year to address the areas identified.

Results: Professional Development and Communication accomplishments made by the Engagement Committee with the goal of increasing engagement were: (1) Creation of the Navigation Roadmap. The Navigation Roadmap offers professional development suggestions for navigators should they choose to explore opportunities for professional growth and development. The Roadmap is an interactive tool that includes links to helpful resources. (2) The Engagement Committee partnered with the Sarah Cannon Advisory Board to create and distribute a communication tool that highlights navigation accomplishments.

Conclusion: The Sarah Cannon Engagement Committee’s goal was to improve engagement by focusing on and addressing issues identified as areas for improvement that could be directly impacted by initiating navigator-driven change among the navigation team. At the time of submission, the Engagement Committee had not yet reviewed the findings of the most recent engagement (Vital Voices) survey.
